Gutters are a necessary component of a home, and they can create serious problems when they remain clogged for long periods of time. If you’re wondering why it’s important to maintain leafless gutters all year round, here are five reasons to consider.
1. Your Foundation
The purpose of gutters is to collect rainwater and direct it away from your home so that it doesn’t accumulate on the roof or around the foundation. When your gutters are clogged, water overflows and pools at the foundation. Frequent and long-term accumulation of water around the foundation can leak into your home, erode the foundation material and even cause the foundation to shift.
2. Your Roof
Water that doesn’t overflow clogged gutters remains puddled on top of your roof. This can cause water to sneak under the shingles and into your home. Accumulated water causes mold growth, ceiling leaks and roof shingle corrosion.
3. Your Gutters
Leafless gutters last a long time, but clogged gutters have a shorter life span . As leaves and other debris accumulate, they add weight to the gutters. Excessive weight can weaken the attachment points and even cause the gutters to break or bend.Broken gutters are no use to your home and need to be replaced.
4. Your Siding
When water overflows clogged gutters, it pours down the side of your house and takes debris and other particles with it. The force of the water along with the debris can damage your siding and cause wooden areas to rot.
5. Your Garden
Though plants always enjoy a good rain shower, they don’t like soaking in standing water. The garden surrounding your home can suffer from overwatering when your gutters overflow during heavy rains.
Part of homeownership includes maintaining leafless gutters to protect your foundation, roof and home exterior. Consider installing guards or screens that prevent clogs and allow your gutters to do their job.
